Activities & intineraries

Below, we highlight some of the most recommended hikes, activities, and places of interest, along with suggested two- and three-day itineraries for both summer and winter stays. Remember the itineraries can be extended to more days to cover it all, or to have some days to just let the beauty soak in

The Great Outdoors

The great outdoors at Lofnes — and throughout the surrounding district — is truly extraordinary. With the woods literally at your doorstep, an easy short evening walk to the forest viewpoints is the perfect way to settle in after arrival.

Hornelen

The iconic Mount Hornelen is the great landmark in this part of the fjord district. Rising almost 900 meters straight up from the fjord, it is Northern Europe’s highest sea cliff.

From Lofnes, you have a direct view across the water to the mountain’s iconic profile, ever-changing with light and weather.

Hornelen was first mentioned in Viking sagas more than 1,000 years ago, and local folklore tells of witches gathering on the summit on Midsummer’s Eve. While we cannot verify the legends, the hike to Hornelen is undeniably magical and widely regarded as a true bucket-list experience.

The trailhead is just a 12-minute drive from Lofnes. The hike is a spring-autumn activity and should be planned as a full-day excursion (8-10 hrs). A  normal to good level of fitness is required. For those seeking a more adventurous approach, climbing Hornelen via the Via Ferrata route is highly recommended. Guided climbs can be booked here.

Vetvika

The hike to the deserted settlement of Vetvika and the remote Vetvika Beach is also a journey back in time. The trailhead is a 30-minute drive from Lofnes.

In recent years, this route has become increasingly popular, and many hikers choose to spend the night camping on the beach, surrounded by dramatic nature and complete solitude.

This hike is best suited for the spring-to-autumn season and should be planned as a full-day excursion, typically taking 8–10 hours. A normal to good level of fitness is required.

The Lofnes’ woods and mountains

Right outside your door at Lofnes, a variety of outdoor experiences await — no driving required and no specific fitness level needed to enjoy nature at its finest.

The surrounding woods, hills, and mountains are accessible year-round, with trails ranging from short 30-minute walks to near full-day hikes.

In your accommodation, you will find detailed route descriptions along with our personal recommendations, making it easy to choose an experience that suits both your time and pace.

Vingen

Just across the fjord from Lofnes lies Vingen, a place that takes you 7,000 years back in time. With more than 2,200 prehistoric rock carvings, Vingen is Norway’s second-largest known rock art site.

Recent research suggests that Vingen served as a ceremonial site for nearly 900 years. Why Stone Age people chose this particular place for their rituals remains a mystery, but the dramatic landscape around Mount Hornelen offers a powerful clue. Vingen has no road access and can only be reached by boat.

During the summer season, organized guided tours operate on Fridays. In addition, Steffen — a certified guide — might arrange private tours by boat. Detailed information is available in your accommodation.

Activities

The great outdoors at Lofnes is powerful, peaceful, and endlessly inspiring. Forest trails start at your doorstep, fjords stretch out below you, and mountains rise straight from the sea.
